Common snakes of Austin include garter snakes, rat snakes, racers, and water snakes. There are many other species of snake in Austin, but many of them are rare. Venomous snakes of Austin are also rare. People are aware of the copperheads and timber rattlesnakes in the northeast US, the cottonmouth and eastern diamondback rattlesnake in the southeast, the coral snake throughout the south, and the various rattlesnakes in the southwest, but all of these are not commonly encountered. If in doubt, stay away, and never try to pick up or kill or interact with any snake.

Austin snake tip of the month: The problem of Burmese Pythons in south Florida - The Burmese python is a constrictor snake not native to southern Florida, but due to captive snakes being released or escaping into the wild, these animals are breeding and thriving in the Florida Everglades. Burmese pythons can grow upwards of 18 feet in length, and they have no known predators once they reach adulthood. They have become such an issue in Florida that in 2012, an 8-year research study showed severe declines in the Everglade mammal population; not just in one or two species, but across the board. Now, in an attempt to curtail this hit to a unique ecosystem, Florida has hired hunters to go into the Everglades and round up the pythons they find. Thankfully, the hunting is easier than for other snakes; Burmese pythons are fairly slow, spending most of their time laying in wait to ambush prey. They use an initial burst of speed to obtain their prey, but after that, they are not known to be speedy creatures.
