Venomous snakes of Monterey are also rare. People are aware of the copperheads and timber rattlesnakes in the northeast US, the cottonmouth and eastern diamondback rattlesnake in the southeast, the coral snake throughout the south, and the various rattlesnakes in the southwest, but all of these are not commonly encountered. If in doubt, stay away, and never try to pick up or kill or interact with any snake.

Monterey snake tip of the month: Where should I relocate a trapped snake? - There are mixed opinions on relocating snakes. Some people feel it is as inhumane as relocating something lower on the food chain, like a rodent, and some people feel that a snake has a greater chance of survival and will be fine. Ultimately, relocating animals is risk business. Any animal, outside of its familiar territory, will be vulnerable and confused, and unless you're relocating apex predators, there will always be something bigger out there that might come along and eat it. When it comes to snakes, a snake habitually in your yard means it lives somewhere near your home. Depending on the species of snake, a den site might even be on your property. While most snakes are transient in their movements, meaning they will move throughout their territory rather than stay on the same stone by your pond, they may still feel your property is part of home base. For the most humane relocation, this means a trapped snake should be released no more than 1000 feet from your property and that even depends on the size of your yard. Most people want a more permanent solution, so 1000 feet doesn't sound too appealing. If you must relocate a snake outside of its comfort zone, do your best to ensure it is in an area of appropriate cover with access to a stream or other water source where the snake can find prey.
