Norwalk snake tip of the month: The Banded Water Snake: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior - The banded water snake is a large snake found in the Southern regions of North America. Growing up to 40 inches in length, this snake is characterized by brownish coloring and a yellow belly with red or black spots. Though naturally darker in color, these snakes do have cross banding that decreases in prevalence as they age. The banded water snake has no problem taking on larger prey, and it favors marshy areas where it has access to plenty of rodents, amphibians, birds, and other snakes. Though not a very aggressive snake, these animals will stand their ground if pushed, though their first line of defense is to release an irritating musk. Banded water snakes are often mistaken for more menacing water snakes, like the venomous cottonmouth, but despite their size, these snakes do not have a life-threatening bite.
